Not long ago, I had the opportunity to attend a day-long workshop on anger and forgiveness, presented by Robert Grant, Ph.D. After I signed up for the workshop, I learned - to my delight - that Dr. Grant is the same person who wrote a profound but hard-to-find book on recovery from trauma: The Way of the Wound (A Spirituality of Trauma and Transformation).

During the workshop, I realized I was learning from a man who has experienced life in hell more than once and successfully worked his way back. I wasn't surprised to learn that Dr. Grant travels the world to help survivors and supporting professionals to cope more effectively with the effects of trauma and abuse. I have met other recovering survivors who have chosen to do the same. Each time I meet one of them I quickly sense that if I am willing to accept what I'm about to hear from them, what they share will alter the course of my life - in a good way, of course. Dr. Grant's presentation was no exception.

What he shared from his own experiences of dealing with human evil (really, the primal or "shadow" self) in others and himself challenged me to work harder on facing harsh realities about human nature, and to accept the existence of "dark" places in myself and others with more grace and honesty.

Since then, I learned that Dr. Grant has written a series of self-published books about trauma and recovery. Because I cannot find a website for his books, and the few copies available on the Internet are seriously overpriced, I developed this web page to make it easier to order them in the future.

The information below is excerpted in piecemeal fashion from pp. 105-115 of Dr. Grant's newest book, Growth Through Adversity

Robert Grant is a consultant and trainer to business, religious, medical, psychological, military, law enforcement, relief and missionary organizations. He works at home and abroad in the areas of trauma, spirituality and cross-cultural issues. As a psychologist he has gone into trauma zones to support and treat victims, as well as professionals working on site with victims of trauma. He has assessed/treated over 1000 victims of trauma (over a sixteen year period) and trained over 10,000 professionals around the world to work with victims of trauma. He is the author of:

bulletA Healing Response to Terrorism (A Handbook for Administrators, Mental Health and Spiritual Responders). This handbook addresses preventative measures (training, planning, drilling, as well as policies and procedures) that various business, educational and government organizations should put in place in order to minimize the emotional impact of mass disasters. In addition, treatment (on site, off site and long term, as well as psychological and spiritual) is covered in detail. This handbook is a must for administrators and professional responders regarding prevention, treatment and self care. Cost: $20 US.
bulletComplicated Trauma: Diagnosis and Treatment (A Working Manual for Therapists, Physicians and Pastoral Counselors). This work provides practitioners a comprehensive approach to the assessment/treatment of Complicated Trauma. It goes beyond looking at trauma in terms of single events, PTSD symptoms, psychological stabilization and returns to functioning. Rather it focuses on the underlying shifts that take place in organizations of self, other, world and God. This work is a must for therapists, physicians, nurses, social workers, hospice volunteers, chaplains, humanitarian workers, pastoral counselors, spiritual directors and body workers who accompany victims of trauma on their complex journey of healing. Cost: $55.00 US.
bullet(NEW) Growth Through Adversity (Coming Out the Other Side of Trauma, Illness and Loss). Many in the wake of trauma move in search of something more than what they previously built their lives around, e.g., career, looks, status, money and achievements. All of the aforementioned fail to satisfy a psyche and soul that have been awakened by the jarring effects of trauma. The overwhelming and deconstructive effects of trauma throw into question or destroy what was formerly used to hold internal and external reality together. Traumatized individuals have been cast outside former frames of reference and holding structures. As a result, they have been placed on a path that humans have been walking for thousands of years. Following this path to its conclusion can not only bring about healing and resolution but also profound transformation. Growth Through Adversity offers trauma survivors with both a map and tools (conceptual and linguistic) that will enable them to not only stay on the path of healing but also become more wiser and more profound in the process. Cost: $40.
bulletHealing the Soul of the Church (Ministers Facing Their Own Childhood Abuse and Trauma). Healing the Soul of the Church compassionately addresses a painful and sensitive subject. It offers hope, insight and direction to ministers suffering from the debilitating effects of unresolved childhood abuse and/or trauma. It is required reading for anyone concerned about healing today's church. Cost: $20 US.
bulletI Love a War Veteran (A Handbook for Families, Veterans and Professionals Dealing with the Effects of Combat Stress and Trauma): A great deal is involved when loving a War Veteran (WV), let alone someone struggling with the effects of combat stress and trauma...Unless veterans, along with their loved ones, find ways to integrate the implications of war experience into wider frames of reference they will continue to struggle with considerable pain, loss and personal diminishment. In many instances, the way life was characterized before the war has been damaged or overturned as a result of having witnessed and/or participated in killing and destruction. This handbook is designed for veterans, family members, loved ones and professionals who work with war veterans and their families as they attempt to reconstruct their lives in the wake of war...Finally this handbook helps veterans and families navigate through a minefield of obstacles that prevent them from resolving their war-related experiences and accessing appropriate care from both the Military and the Veterans Administration. Cost: $30.00 US.
bulletLiving and Working in Environments of Violence and Trauma (A Resource Manual for Humanitarian Workers). This manual is designed to prepare, support and return personnel living and working in environments of violence. This includes mental-health and medical professionals, firefighters, law enforcement, military, Peace Corps and Vista Volunteers, military, relief and disaster workers, missionaries, teachers, journalists and chaplains...The information contained in this manual improves career longevity and productivity, as well as overall health. On an organizational level it can decrease health care costs, reduce employee attrition, and raise morale. It is a must for any organization or individual exposed to violence trauma (directly or indirectly) on a regular basis. Cost: $45 US.
bulletThe Challenge of Forgiveness (As Faced by Victims of Betrayal and Abuse): Victims of violence/betrayal are frequently pressured by perpetrators, family and community members to forgive those who abused, abandoned and betrayed them during and in the wake of their abuse. This occurs regardless of whether transgressors and abusers have apologized, rehabilitated or compensated victims for the damages they caused...To make matters worse, unforgiving and resentful individuals are frequently considered emotionally immature or spiritually defective by people at large whereas in reality most are trying to preserve what is left of their personal spirit in the face of social indifference and feelings of helplessness...This book is required reading for every victim of abuse, concerned family member, or supportive professional who is trying to work through the effects of human-generated violence.  Cost: $30.00 US.
bulletThe Way of the Wound (A Spirituality of Trauma and Transformation). Every victim of trauma is asked to embark on a path of healing that mystics, shamans and mythic heroes have been walking for thousands of years. The only difference is that now the path is contemporary and, therefore, more conscious. Trauma provides a modern day access to this spiritual path. The Way of the Wound lays out the path of healing, along with the central issues and obstacles that survivors must negotiate at every crucial point along the way. This work offers hope and inspiration and, more importantly, direction to every victim of trauma wanting to move to the next level of healing. Cost: $30 US.
bulletVicarious Trauma (A Handbook for Professionals Working with Traumatized Populations). Without support and effective detoxing protocols professionals run the risk of serious health problems, addiction to high-risk activities and substances, along with domestic violence, divorce, suicide, homicide and a loss of faith (in both God and humanity)...Vicarious Trauma is a must for any professionals wanting to maintain physical, emotional, interpersonal, and spiritual health, as well as professional effectiveness and career longevity. Cost: $30.00 US.
